Christa Smutek, Dance Educator

Christa studied at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and received her B.S. in Movement Science from the School of Kinesiology graduating with distinction and University Honors. Christa has been teaching for 8 years. She received her training from Angie Hahn, Marie Rabey, Addison O’Day, Gerald O’Day, and Jacob Lascu.  She pursued additional classical training at various summer intensives including Joffrey Midwest, ABT Detroit, and the National Ballet School of Canada while also earning a Grade 6 Cecchetti Council certification.  Christa continued her ballet training through U of M’s School of Dance under Melissa Beck, Judy Rice, and Amy West. Christa has received merit-based scholarships from Ballet Met, ABT Detroit, Jump Dance Convention, and Dance Rogue.  Her contemporary choreography was selected and showcased at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival 2014.  In addition to being a teacher and choreographer, Christa has danced with ArtLab J Dance; a Detroit based contemporary modern dance company.  She is Co-Director of Detroit's Next Level Dance Company and was formerly Co-Chair of U of M’s EnCore Hip Hop Crew. She is currently the Rehearsal Director and company dancer in Milwaukee’s newly established SueMo: A Dance Experience. Furthermore, Christa is a former state champion gymnast.
